The Idaho city of Malad, with population of barely 2000, remains the only city in Oneida County and is the home of the Oneida County Fair races. The city was established in 1864 and gets its name from the nearby Malad River. The Oneida races take place on the Oneida County Fairground which dates back to 1896. The Fair was originally based near to Oneida Airport, close to Corn Street, before visiting a number of locations, including on the shores of Lake Tomahawk and Hodag Country Festival. However, the Fair now resides on Pioneer Park. The 4 furlong oval racetrack benefits from a 275 metre chute, and holds quarter horse races over 4 days and 2 weekends in August. The normal chain of events is trials during the first weekend, culminating in the final of the Craig Daniels Memorial Derby during the following weekend.
